Free surgery day on tap at Surgery Center of Fort Collins
FORT COLLINS - The Surgery Center of Fort Collins will hold its inaugural free surgery day on Oct. 5, offering surgeries free-of-charge to qualifying patients.
The Surgery Center's surgeons and other staff will donate their time, and the center will ask its suppliers to donate supplies in order to offer surgeries at no cost, according to Megan Mitchem, the center's business development coordinator. Planned procedures include ear, nose and throat, gynecology and general surgery. Dr. Mark Loury, one of 23 physician-owners at the Surgery Center, is leading the effort, according to a release from the clinic.
"The community has an unmet need. Many people don't realize that a large percentage of the population is uninsured or underinsured," Loury said.
Birmingham, Ala.-based Surgical Care Affiliates, a 25 percent owner in the Surgery Center, helps manage a surgery center in Pueblo that has held a similar event in the past, Mitchem said. The Surgery Center of Fort Collins has been working with the Pueblo center to put together their event. Free surgery day was initially planned for August, Mitchem said, but the event turned out to be a bigger project than initially thought.
The Surgery Center will distribute applications to independent care providers in the area for referrals. Then, the center will partner with local health care providers and nonprofits to collect and screen applicants. The deadline to apply is Sept. 20.
The goal is to provide the same number of surgeries on free surgery day as any other day, Mitchem said. On an average day, the Surgery Center does about 15 surgeries, she said, but on one busy day did 22 procedures. The Surgery Center has 130 doctors on staff, including 46 surgeons. It was formed in 1998 to provide a structure that allows physician-owners to participate in the management of an ambulatory surgery center as a group.
The Surgery Center of Fort Collins is located at the intersection of Lemay Avenue and Prospect Road in Fort Collins.
